The anime hasn’t received any announcements for the past 5 years
Noragami (or stray god) is an excellent shounen anime series that contains the right mix of drama, action, as well as slice of life comedy. The two seasons that released where immensely successful, but in the five years since, no news regarding a third season has been announced.
Whenever we need to know if an anime has chances of getting a sequel, here’s a simple method to find out.
Sales, source material and popularity
Let’s start with the source material. The main source is the manga, and as of 2020, it’s still ongoing. If the story concluded, that can be a reason as to why the series has trouble getting renewed.
Next would be the number of volumes. Noragami currently has 22 manga volumes available in Japan, with two spin-off stories. The first one is about the protagonist Yato and his encounter with a society called Noragami: Stray God. The second story is called Noragami: Stray Stories but so far, only one volume has been released and it on hold.
The latest volume released in Japan on June 17, 2020. The author Adachitoka had written one volume in 2017, one in 2018, two in 2019, and back to one in 2020.
The first season covered volumes 1-3, and the second season covered volumes 4-9. That means, we have twelve books worth of material left to be animated.
Next comes sales. The purpose of animes is to make profit as well, and each season can cost up to 3 million dollars. Chances of sequels usually diminish because they usually make less than the first one. As for the Blu-Ray sales, season 1 got around 5,000 and season 2 got around 2000. Now that’s a big drop. But the manga sales are doing better, with volume 21 selling as much as 120,000 copies. However, the overall sales are still low as volume 12 sold around 300,000 copies.
There are many ways to make money, but if the show doesn’t have any ways in mind, the it may not happen.
