The four-part Netflix documentary shows the horrifying crimes of Richard Ramirez, aka, the Night Stalker

Netflix’s true crime documentaries have gone up a notch with their latest four-part series on the Night Stalker murders and how ace homicide detectives Gil Carrillo and Frank Salerno got to the depths of it.

It truly took guts to live in California during the ’70s and ’80s since it was a hot spot for murderers, rapists, and everything in between, and Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer makes us realise that once again. The city really looked did juggle glitz and glamour by day and terror that made your blood run cold at night.

The Night Stalker has still left his mark on the majority of Los Angeles and you can see why the man has made it to a few seasons of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story. Read on.

The documentary by Tiller Russell didn’t particularly sensationalise Ramirez and neither were his crimes showcased as the stuff of legend. Russell was previously the writer and producer on several of Dick Wolf’s Chicago-based dramas and hence he has taken an approach focusing more on the police. Therefore, Gil Carrillo and Frank Salerno take the spotlight.

The two detectives’ story was almost similar to a cop show. Carrillo was a young punk detective from East L.A. with ambitious dreams while Salerno was already a local legend. Russell treats them in a similar way and even shows their family life.

The show has a few unnecessary parts but is done well overall. The crimes are disturbing and you really start to wonder what goes inside the head of such a person to commit something so heinous. The police work is very interesting to watch, and the four episodes just zoom past without you realising.
