Will Sherlock return for a fifth season? The cast and crew have been teasing it’s arrival for a while now
Here are all the news we know so far
Fans of BBC’s beloved series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the genius, wise cracking detective may be pleased to know that the show might return with a fifth season. In the meantime, Netflix has released Enola Holmes which tells the story of Sherlock’s teenaged sister and aspiring detective, and a French series called Lupin, which was said by many to be similar to Sherlock. Both Netflix and the BBC has teased that more episodes will be coming.
Release date
At this stage, no official date has been given but the show is expected to arrive in either 2022 or 2023, which is a long wait since season 4 came out 4 years ago, in Jan. 2017.
During an interview with Digital Spy, co-creator Steven Moffat stated that he hadn’t really thought about it. He and Mark Gatiss (co-showrunner) had been busy with other projects and hadn’t sat down to discuss the future of the series.
But he did add that he and Gatiss had been looking into other original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for inspiration.
What will happen next?
If they make another season, it’s expected to pick up from where season 4 left off and we will be seeing Eurus Holmes back in the confines of her safety unit. The season 4 finale, titled “The Final Problem” revealed that Eurus was in fact a master manipulator who loved taunting her detective brother for the thrill of it.
Sherlock also found out the sad news that Eurus had killed his best friend Redbeard when they were children and had somehow had him believe a different story. He and Watson continue to be friends and partners and will be back together should another season be made.
The creators have expressed interest in a story called the Red-Headed League, where Professor Moriarty attempts to rob a bank.
