Days before Joe Biden’s inauguration: Here’s a peek into how this presidential election became a cultural touchstone

Biden’s inauguration will also be featuring Tom Hanks, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake and Jon Bon Jovi

The transfer of presidential power in the United States has always been a political event that nobody missed. Back when President Andrew Jackson took office, it was said that there were so many people at his inaugural reception that he escaped through a White House Window. President Kennedy enlisted his friend Frank Sinatra to provide the entertainment during his time, and the Obamas arranged for Beyoncé.

But things are quite different now. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic entering a more deadly phase, and Washington being on high alert following the Capitol Hill riot and more security threats at the horizon, President-elect Joe Biden will have a more socially distant and less flamboyant inauguration.

Biden’s inaugural committee announced on Wednesday that they will be holding a prime-time television event on January 20 featuring celebrities such as Tom Hanks, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato and Jon Bon Jovi with an aim to “showcase the American people’s resilience, heroism, and unified commitment to coming together as a nation to heal and rebuild.”

The crowds that would usually show up to show support have been urged to stay at home so as to control the spread of the virus. Lina Mann, a historian at the White House Historical association spoke about what usually went down when a new President takes office. There is the parade, the visit to Capitol, then the speeches, the oaths, and finally the inaugural balls. This is a system that has been followed for more than 200 years, and it’s all going to change this time.

Biden has been a man who wanted to be the president for decades and is preparing to write his own entry into the country’s inaugural history. While glitzy or glamorous parties don’t lie before him, the task to unify, entertain and save the divided American public is ever present.
