HBO Max will be making a new show on DC’s Constantine and will be recasting the character

We will miss seeing Matt Ryan as the beloved character

HBO Max is reportedly making a new  Constantine series in association with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. The show will also be recasting DC’s Hellblazer. The character was last portrayed on television by Matt Ryan, who appeared on the short-lived NBC show as well as the CW’s Arrowverse series Legends of Tomorrow. Ryan had also voiced the character in several of DC’s animated movies. Before that, he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 movie.

The character’s history

NBC

Constantine belongs to the bizarre section of DC characters and was first introduced in 1985 before getting his own series in 1988. Every Constantine story is a mix between smoky noir detective fiction and dark occult fantasy, and has always been a success. With the birth of the DCEU, many fans have started to expect the character’s own movie or series and how it fits into the present timeline.

The Illuminerdi, who leaked the information regarding the series claims that Warner is looking to recast the character with a young actor of colour, someone similar to Riz Ahmed. The group had claimed in 2020 that Abrams will be teaming up with Warner Bros. for Constantine and what was originally planned as a movie can be a streaming series instead. Constantine is way too interesting to fit into a 2-hour movie anyway.

The possibilities with Constantine

DC Comics

The character is popular among the dedicated fanbase, but not so much outside. His situation can be compared to that of Black Panther before he was introduced in Captain America: Civil War and earning the widespread popularity he has today. A major platform like HBO Max would be just what the character needs to become more known.

Introducing Constantine can soon transition to projects like Justice League: Dark and Swamp Thing. We are yet to hear an official confirmation on this report, but if it’s true, we have a lot to look forward to.
