Official statement
The team-up was officially announced by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke on Twitter.
Salke spoke about her excitement, calling them the dream team and two of the most talented creators and performers in the world and said she couldn’t wait to see how Donald and Phoebe bring their own twist to something as iconic as Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Both actors had worked with Amazon Studios in the past. Waller-Bridge created and started in the Emmy-winning series Fleabag and Glover’s musical film Guava Island was also an Amazon Original.
They will be co-creating the series with Francesca Sloane, who will be serving as the showrunner. The other executive producers will be Regency’s Yariv Milcban and Michael Schaefer along with Wells Street Films’ Jenny Robins.
Milchan and Schaefer also spoke about their excitement in working with Glover again, after Guava Island. They said that they had been discussing other projects when Glover suggested this one, and they immediately decided to do it. Collaborating with Phoebe and her company Sells Street Films takes it to a whole other level.
Previous gigs
Glover and Waller-Bridge had previously worked together in Solo: A Star Wars Story as Lando Calrissian and droid L3-37. Their natural chemistry and comic timing were well received, and the two have been very supportive of each other’s careers as well. Glover got to present Waller-Bridge with the British Artist of the Year honour at the British Academy Britannia Awards.
