Impeachment: American Crime Story casts Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton
The series will be focusing on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal
Impeachment: American Crime Story has casted The Sopranos star Edie Falco as former first lady Hillary Clinton. The anthology crime series, executive produced by Ryan Murphy, began in 2016 and addressed the events surrounding the O.J. Simpson murder trial. The second season also highlighted famous crimes from the ’90s such as the assassination of fashion designer Gianni Versace. It was announced in 2020 that season 3 will be about the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, as told from Monica Lewinsky’s viewpoint.
The cast
Falco’s casting as Hillary Clinton had been one of the final characters from the infamous scandal to be cast, and she has joined an impressive roster of talented Hollywood stars, which includes Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, Clive Owen as Bill Clinton, Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones, and Betty Gilpin as political commentator Ann Coulter. FX is reportedly going to release the new season in 2021.
Lewinsky is also reportedly producing the series. Production began in 2020 but it was paused after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. But they were quickly able to get back to their feet in early 2021.
The story
Impeachment will be based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book, A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down A President. It will be a great platform for Falco to display her talents even though it was made clear earlier that the former first lady will not be a significant character in the series, as it’s told from Lewinsky’s perspective. Even so, Falco’s ability to become her character and raise the bars of the character she plays will be very useful in tackling a complex character such as Hillary Clinton.
If no further delays happen, expect the series to premiere this year on FX.
