Anvisa approves Fiocruz input and Brazil will have vaccine against Covid-19 100% Brazilian

This Friday (7), the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved the active pharmaceutical ingredient ( IFA ) of the AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Fiocruz. With the approval, Brazil will have the first vaccine against Covid-19 completely produced in the country.

Previously, the API was imported from abroad, which led Fiocruz to delay batches of AstraZeneca's vaccines during the past year. Anvisa authorized the national product after comparing it with the imported one and proving that the two had the same effect.

“It is a great achievement for Brazilian society to have a 100% national vaccine for Covid-19 produced in Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz. The Covid-19 pandemic made clear the problem of dependence on active pharmaceutical ingredients for the production of vaccines. With this approval today by Anvisa, we achieved a vaccine 100% produced in the country and, in this way, we guarantee the self-sufficiency of our Unified Health System [SUS] for this vaccine, which has been saving lives and contributing to overcoming this difficult historical phase of the Brazil and the world,” said Fiocruz president Nísia Trindade Lima.

Fiocruz has around 21 million doses of the vaccine produced with the Brazilian API. The doses are in different stages of production and should be delivered to the Ministry of Health in February.
