The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a trade group led by game industry publishers, canceled E3 2022 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in face-to-face format due to the advancement of Ômicron , a new variant of Covid-19. The company had announced the return of the fitness event in April 2021, however, to the GamesBeat portal, the company confirmed the cancellation and talked about the possibility of remaining in the online version.

“Due to the continuing health risks surrounding Covid-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.” , said ESA, who when asked about an online event, said it was "thrilled by the possibilities."

The decision comes a few months before the exhibition, which takes place in June 2022. Even with the date still far away and the understanding that, by then, the current peak of contaminations may have passed, ESA is still in the midst of companies' registrations for the event that typically bring more than 50,000 industry people and 15,000 fans to the Los Angeles Convention Center – high crowd if we consider the pandemic moment.

If E3 2022 takes place online, it will be the third event in the exhibition of games in this format.
