Dark Souls: Servers Shut Down After Security Breach and Risk of Data Exposure

From Software, developer of the Dark Souls series, shut down all game servers on Sunday morning (23) to investigate a possible hacker invasion. According to information from Gamespot, a Remote Code Execution (RCE) was found in Dark Souls 3 and could compromise PC players' data, as access could give control of the computer to someone else.

The possibility of access was pointed out by a player, who sent a report to the company showing how to carry out the procedure. The vulnerability also puts Dark Souls1, 2 and Elden Ring – yet to be released – at risk, so the company decided to shut down PC PvP servers during the investigation.

Via Twitter, the game's official page explained what happened and apologized to the players.

“PvP servers for Dark Souls 2 and 3 and Dark Souls: Remastered have been temporarily disabled to allow the team to investigate recent reports of an issue with online services. Servers for Dark Souls: PtDE will be joining them soon. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

The error is being considered as an 'exploit', that is, a piece of software or sequence of commands that takes advantage of a defect or failure in order to cause unforeseen behavior in electronic devices. Although serious, apparently the resource was not used for criminal purposes, such as data theft – despite the risk.
