Call of Duty: next three games still to be released for PlayStation

Since the announcement of the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft, fans of the Call of Duty series have been wondering how the game will be distributed, as the acquired developer owns the Call of Duty franchise, but Microsoft has exclusivity with Xbox.

However, CoD players can calm down, at least for now, as the agreement, according to Bloomberg, states that the next three Call of Duty releases will still be available for Sony's consoles.

That includes this year's Call of Duty, which is set to be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare, which is being developed by Infinity Ward, and the follow-up game, for 2023, which is in development at Treyarch, – both studios owned by Activation. The deal also includes a planned new iteration of Warzone (a Warzone 2), the lucrative free-to-play game released in 2020.

Last week, a Sony spokesperson mentioned fears that the deal would affect the company's contracts with Activision Blizzard. Around the same time, Phil Spencer, who was recently named CEO of Microsoft Gaming, confirmed that all agreements would be fulfilled.

"I confirmed our intention to honor all existing agreements in the acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation," he said on Twitter. “Sony is an important part of our industry and we value our relationship.”

Traditionally, Call of Duty games are released on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation. However, the franchise was heavily tied to major marketing deals with PlayStation, including being one of the best-selling games on PS4 and PS5. According to the NPD Group, Call of Duty games were the top selling titles in the US.

So, for at least the next two or three years – also considering the time to complete the sales contract, which can go from six to 18 months – the players are guaranteed in the next CoD, however, the future is uncertain. Microsoft invested nearly $70 billion in acquiring Activision Blizzard. In terms of administration and investment management, the company may decide not to keep games on, in a way, rivals – which would be the case with PlayStation.

Officially, neither Activision nor Microsoft has commented on the matter.
