MediaTek Kompanio 1380 promises strong performance on Chromebook

MediaTek announced, this Wednesday (26), details about the new MediaTek Kompanio 1380 chip to equip tablets and also Chromebooks with some extra strength. The new SoC is a version of the recent Dimensity, it is capable of running its octa-core processor at up to 3 GHz on ARM architecture.

Gradually the chromebook market is gaining more options for processors in ARM architecture, the most recent of which is in the hands of MediaTek, with the Kompanio 1380. This new chip has eight cores running at up to 3 GHz, along with the Mali-G57 GPU that it is also present in smartphones like the Galaxy A32 5G and the recent Redmi Note 11 Pro.

Looking at the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 datasheet, we find four of the eight cores in Cortex-A78s and this set is responsible for offering up to 3 GHz for strong performance. The RAM comes in 2,133 MHz LPDDR4X with four channels and the graphics card promises support for displaying images in up to 4K, with 60 frames per second and with HDR – there is even support for two external screens at 2160p, but with a limit of 30Hz.

MediaTek Kompanio 1380 brings support for AV1 codec

The content displayed on the display can be natively decoded from the AV1 codec, used by companies like Netflix to consume less data for the same final video quality. This feature is important for high resolution transmission with greater compression, going up to 8K, also ensuring greater battery life at these times.

In connection, the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 can work with Wi-Fi 6, 6E and also Bluetooth 5. The first Chromebook with this chip is the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, recently presented with three other models, during this year's CES.

As exciting as this new processor may be, the Acer model lost four hours of autonomy when compared to the previous generation and its Qualcomm chip.
