Kogonada and Justin Chon are directing and producing Pachinko, an upcoming American drama television series (4 episodes each). The series stars Youn Yuh-Jung, Lee Min-ho, Jin Ha, and Anna Sawai and is based on Min Jin Lee’s novel of the same name. It will premiere on Apple TV+ on March 25, 2022.

Lee’s Pachinko follows a single Korean family over four generations in 20th-century Japan as they “battle for their destiny.” It starts in the early 1900s, against the backdrop of Japan’s annexation of Korea, and centres on Sunja, a beloved daughter. Her partner abandons her, leaving her with an unanticipated pregnancy that could jeopardise her family’s reputation.
A young pastor, on the other hand, promises to marry her and bring her to Japan, which helps her get out of her predicament. The book synopsis reads, “So starts a vast epic of an outstanding family in isolation from its homeland and caught in the indifferent arc of history.”

Cast of Pachinko
Youn Yuh Jung, a South Korean film superstar who won an Oscar for her work in Minari, will play protagonist Sunja in her later years. She told the Los Angeles Times, “I read the storey and I was deeply touched: ‘It’s me, and I can play this role well.”
Lee Minho, a Korean superstar, is also in the cast. “I wanted to be loyal to the character,” he said of his portrayal as Hansu to Esquire Korea, according to NME. “As a result, I attempted to concentrate on how desperate they were to survive at the moment.
