The Weeknd, pen name of Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada), was a Canadian rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter best known for his explicit songs about sex and drugs, many of which were autobiographical, as well as his soaring falsetto and its distinctive tremolo.

Numerous awards and nominations have been bestowed upon him, including three Grammy Awards, nineteen Billboard Music Awards, fifteen Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and an Academy Award nomination.

Tesfaye was arrested in January 2015 in Las Vegas for allegedly punching a police officer while being taken into an elevator to break up a fight. He entered a plea of not guilty and was sentenced to fifty hours of community service.

Tesfaye was criticised in January 2019 for some of the lyrics in his and Gesaffelstein’s single “Lost in the Fire.” The second verse of the song begins “You said you’re into girls, said you’re going through a phase / Keeping your heart safe / Well, baby, you can bring a friend / She can ride on top your face / While I fuck you straight,” was accused of being homophobic, fetishizing bisexuality, and perpetuating the myth that a person who identifies as LGBTQ+ can be “turned straight.”

However, some listeners have suggested that the lyrics refer to a sexual position. Tesfaye addressed the controversy quietly in the song “Snowchild” from his fourth studio album After Hours, writing, “Every month another accusation / The only thing I’m afraid of is failing.”

Simi and the singer were spotted in February 2022 at Sunset Tower in West Hollywood, following reports that Bella had unfollowed both Abel and Simi on Instagram.

The Weeknd and Angelina Jolie sparked dating rumours in July 2021 after they were spotted in Los Angeles enjoying a cosy dinner together. The pair was spotted moments apart leaving Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica. They were later spotted on another secret date’ at a Los Angeles concert.

Selena Gomez, The Weeknd’s ex-girlfriend, met Angelina’s ex-husband Brad in 2016, while they were still married. That same year, The Weeknd released his chart-topping single ‘Party Monster,’ which included a nod to both Angelina and Selena.
