Alexander “Ali” Marpet (born April 17, 1993) is a former American football guard who spent seven seasons with the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL). Marpet attended Hobart College, a tiny liberal arts college with a student body of 2,271.
He was named to Lindy’s preseason All-American first team, the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) All-American first team, the D3football.com All-America first team, and the Liberty League’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2014.

Hobart Institution is a small private liberal arts institution with 2,271 students located in Geneva, New York. Due to the school’s NCAA Division III status, athletic scholarships are not offered. Prior to Marpet, the NFL had drafted only one other Hobart football player: halfback Fred King, who appeared in one game for the NFL’s Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937.
Marpet was not widely recruited after graduating from high school by larger collegiate programmes. He increased his weight from 250 pounds (110 kg) as a freshman to 280 pounds (130 kg) in his sophomore year and 290 pounds (130 kg) in his junior year by eating 7,000–9,000 calories each day.
He hoped to play basketball and football in college. Marpet’s performance at the NFL Scouting Combine in February 2015 identified him as one of the NFL Draft’s most athletic offensive linemen. Among offensive linemen, he set the top 40-yard sprint time of 4.98 seconds and the fastest 10-yard (9.1 m) split time of 1.71 seconds.
Additionally, he finished second in the three-cone drill (7.33 seconds) in the 20-yard shuttle (4.47). He tied for sixth place among offensive linemen with 30 reps at 225 pounds in the bench press (102 kg).
Marpet started all 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first season, and despite missing three games (from Week 10 to Week 12) with an ankle injury, Pro Football Focus (PFF) rated him as the league’s best run-blocking guard in Week 8.
He logged 1,135 snaps in 2016, ranking second among NFL guards, and was one of only two offensive linemen in Tampa Bay to play every snap. He earned a PFF rating of 84.5, which ranked him 13th among NFL guards.
His 84.4 run-blocking grade was rated sixth in the NFL, while his 84.1 pass-blocking grade was fifth. Marpet signed a five-year, $55.125 million contract extension with the Buccaneers on October 9, 2018, with $27.125 million in guaranteed money.
With an average salary of $10.825 million a season, he became the NFL’s seventh-highest paid guard and the third-highest paid left guard behind Andrew Norwell of the Jaguars ($13.3 million) and Kelechi Osemele of the Raiders ($11.7 million).
He was named to the Pro Football Focus All-Underrated Team in 2019. Marpet was re-elected as team captain in 2019. Marpet participated in 13 games and started 13 of them during the 2020 regular season. Marpet played in all four games during the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV-winning postseason run.

Marpet announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 28 in an Instagram post on February 27, 2022. He retired with two years remaining on his contract and a $10 million annual compensation.
