Patrick Paul Gelsinger, (born March 5, 1961) is a corporate leader and engineer from the United States who is presently the CEO of Intel. Gelsinger has been based mostly in Silicon Valley since the late 1970s. He earned a master’s degree in engineering from Stanford University and invented the Intel 80486 CPU in the 1980s.
He previously served as CEO of VMware and as president and chief operating officer (COO) of EMC before returning to Intel. Gelsinger was raised on family farms in rural Robesonia, Pennsylvania, by his parents, June and Paul Gelsinger. He earned an early-admission scholarship as a teenager after earning the highest score on a Lincoln Tech electronics technology test.
He, therefore, skipped his last year of high school and enrolled in college at the age of sixteen. He acquired the remaining high school credits required for graduation and worked as a technician at WFMZ-TV Channel 69 in West Orange, New Jersey, while earning an associate’s degree in 1979 from Lincoln Tech in West Orange, New Jersey.
He moved to Silicon Valley in 1979 at the age of 18 to work as a quality-control technician for Intel. He got a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Santa Clara University in 1983, graduating magna cum laude, and then a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Stanford University in 1985.
