DMX spent numerous years in prison. His multiple arrests include charges of resisting arrest, animal abuse, reckless driving, driving while unlicensed, narcotics possession, and identity fabrication.
DMX filed for bankruptcy in late July 2013 in a Manhattan court. DMX claimed in his application to have approximately $50,000 in assets and between $1 million and $10 million in debt to numerous creditors. He asserted that his primary claim was for child support responsibilities. (Among his debts was $1.24 million in back child support.)
DMX’s attorney made a statement explaining that the rapper has been unable to obtain a passport for several years due to these debts. DMX intended to restructure his debts in order to resume performing internationally, where he still has a sizable following base.
The filing was challenged and later dismissed by the United States Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan later that year. DMX was accused of 14 charges of tax evasion in 2017 involving a total of nearly $1.7 million. In March 2018, he was sentenced to one year in jail for tax evasion.
