Reba McEntire was born on March 28, 1955, in Kiowa, Oklahoma, where she began her career as a rodeo performer as a teenager. Reba first enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma University with the intention of pursuing a career in elementary education.
Outside of school, she performed at several local places. She sang the National Anthem at the National Rodeo in Oklahoma City during her sophomore year. Reba was found as a result of the performance by country musician Red Steagall, who was blown away by her singing powers.
Reba was taken to Nashville, Tennessee by Red in 1997 to record a demo recording. Reba was signed to Mercury Records once the demo tape was heard. She returned to school and completed her degree in December 1976.

She was back in Nashville a month later, recording songs for her upcoming first album. Her debut single was a flop, peaking at #88 on Billboard’s country chart. Reba self-released her debut solo album, Reba, in August 1977. It was a commercial failure. Her second album, 1979’s “Out of a Dream,” included a cover of Patsy Cline’s top-ten smash “Sweet Dreams.”
