Bret Michael’s Career!
Michael’s early connections in the music industry included Rikki Rockett and Bobby Dall — two future Poison members. By 1984, Matt Smith had joined them to form the band Poison. Following their relocation to Los Angeles, the trio saw increased prospects in the city’s burgeoning music scene.
Smith was eventually succeeded by C.C. DeVille. Poison was eventually awarded a record deal by Enigma Records when word travelled throughout Los Angeles. Look What the Cat Dragged In was their self-titled debut album, which initially went unnoticed.
However, Look What the Cat Dragged In achieved platinum status after Bret Michaels organised a hit music video for the track “Talk Dirty to Me.” The trio immediately gained enormous popularity, culminating in a performance at Madison Square Garden.
However, internal disagreements quickly escalated, severely impeding the band’s ability to make successful songs over the next few years. Bret Michaels and C.C. DeVille, in particular, got into heated fights – frequently onstage.
They were frequently involved in fistfights behind closed doors, and they allegedly brawled backstage during the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. As a result, C.C. DeVille eventually departed the band.
Poison later hired Richie Kotzen as a replacement and recorded the album Native Tongue. The album garnered generally positive reviews and was certified gold. Further disagreements with Kotzen resulted in his replacement by Blues Saraceno. Poison followed up with Crack a Smile.
And More! in 2000, which earned more favourable reviews. Michaels sustained very critical injuries in a Ferrari crash and then started on a solo career while maintaining his position at Poison.
Bret’s debut solo album, A Letter from Death Row, was released in 1998 to coincide with the release of his film of the same name. Michaels then released the CD Songs of Life after experimenting with country music.
His follow-up album, Freedom of Sound, was more country-oriented. In 2010, he released the album Custom Built, which featured the number-one single “Nothing to Lose” with Miley Cyrus. Bret Michaels played with Def Leppard in 2012, one of the best bands of the 1980s. He followed that up with another album, True Grit, in 2015.
