Hugo grew up in France during a period of immense political and military instability. Napoleon was declared Emperor of France in 1804 when Hugo was two years old; a little more than a decade later, the monarchy of the House of Bourbon was restored.

Hugo’s own family exemplified these tensions: his father was a republican who supported Napoleon, while his mother was a devout Catholic and fanatical royalist; her boyfriend (and Hugo’s godfather), General Victor Lahore, was hanged for conspiring against Napoleon. Hugo’s mother was the primary caregiver for him, and as a result, his early schooling was deeply religious and firmly pro-monarchy.
