Karl Wallenda (January 21, 1905 – March 22, 1978) was a German-American high wire performer and the founder of The Flying Wallendas, a daredevil circus act that frequently performed perilous exploits without the use of a safety net.

The Great Wallendas were well-known across Europe for their four-man pyramid and high-wire cycling. In 1928, the duo relocated to the United States, where they worked as freelancers. They invented the unmatched three-tiered 7-Man Pyramid in 1947.

Karl Wallenda originated the concept in 1938, but it took until 1946 for him and his brother Hermann to create it and secure the necessary acrobats. The Great Wallendas, a 1978 made-for-TV film starring Karl Wallenda, chronicles the act’s comeback following a tragic accident during a performance involving several family members.

Wallenda died in a high-wire accident 38 days after the show debuted. On July 18, 1970, a 65-year-old Wallenda crossed the Tallulah Gorge, a gorge formed by the Tallulah River in Georgia, with a high-wire walk, commonly known as a skywalk.

Wallenda performed two headstands as he crossed the quarter-mile-wide chasm. In 1974, at the age of 69, he set a new global skywalk distance record of 1,800 feet (550 metres) at Kings Island, a record that held until July 4, 2008, when his great-grandson, Nik Wallenda, did a 2,000-foot (610-meter) skywalk at the same spot.

Despite being embroiled in a number of disasters while performing with his family, Wallenda continued to perform stunts. A wire stretched 121 feet (37 metres) above the sidewalk in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was the site of Wallenda’s attempt to walk between the two towers of the ten-story Condado Plaza Hotel in 1978, when he was 73 years old.

He lost his balance and fell during the attempt as a result of strong winds and a poorly secured wire. Wallenda was pronounced dead at the hospital after his body was transported there.

Most television stations did not broadcast this, however, a film team from local station WAPA-TV in San Juan captured the fall and broadcast it with narration by anchorman Guillermo José Torres on their own channel.

Though afflicted by tragedy and even torn apart by internal strife, subsequent generations of Wallendas have carried on the family legacy of astounding performances.

When asked if she was linked to Nik Wallenda, a nephew who achieved fame as an aerialist by traversing Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon, she said, “No, he is not related to me – I was here before.”

And she was performing to the very end. Ms. Wallenda taped a sway pole headstand for a television programme in 2017 and repeated the stunt in April 2018. In 2019, she was honoured into Sarasota’s Circus Ring of Fame.

“Performance is my greatest passion,” she explained. “When I’m out there, all of my pain and worries go, and I’m in my own universe.”
