John R. Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas on February 26, 1932. Johnny was raised alongside six siblings and began working in the cotton fields with his family at a very young age.

Throughout the Great Depression, his working-class family struggled, which inspired many of his later compositions. His sibling perished in a freak accident when he was 12 years old. Johnny was exposed to Gospel music as a child and actively listened to the radio.

Prior to his adolescence, he was already playing the guitar and writing his own songs. In high school, he had his first taste of a music career when he has sung on a local radio station.

Cash joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18. After finishing his training, he was assigned to West Germany as a morse code operator with the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile. He was tasked with the responsibility of intercepting and decoding Soviet signals.

Despite his rigorous job, he found time to form a band while in Germany. He was honourably discharged as a staff sergeant after four years of service.

Cash relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, after leaving the Air Force in 1954. He began his career selling appliances and studying to be a radio broadcaster, but rapidly moved toward his actual passion: music. He eventually auditioned for Sam Phillips at Sun Records but was rejected due to his Gospel music falling out of style.

He quickly returned with some of the genre’s first examples, including “Hey Porter” and “Cry, Cry, Cry!” Johnny Cash’s career was launched with these tunes.

He followed up with singles such as “I Walk the Line,” which not only topped the country charts but also performed well on the pop charts. “Home of the Blues” solidified Cash’s claim to fame, despite his growing dissatisfaction with Sun Records.

Sam Phillips continued to restrict him from recording Gospel music, and he was only earning a 3% royalty rather than the normal 5%. By 1958, Cash had signed a lucrative contract with Columbia Records and had departed Sun Records.

Cash was feeling the strain of fame, riches, and appearances in films and television shows. He developed an addiction to barbiturates and amphetamines in the late 1950s after initially utilising narcotics to cope with the demands of touring.

Despite the fact that he was visibly losing control, he continued to deliver chart-topping singles such as “Ring of Fire.” Speaking about rings of fire, Johnny Cash was directly responsible for a large forest fire that devastated 508 acres of forest in California. He was sued by the government in 1965 and settled for approximately $80,000 in damages.

Johnny Cash eventually developed a reputation as a rebel. Although he never served a sentence in prison, he was detained multiple times and spent a night in jail before being freed.

Among his offences are collecting flowers on private land and concealing over 1000 prescription medication tablets in his guitar case. He also released the contentious Bitter Tears and the experimental Sings the Ballads of the True West in the mid-1960s.

Cash divorced his wife in the late 1960s and hit rock bottom. His drug problems had deteriorated significantly, but he still won a Grammy for the duet “Jackson” with June Carter.

Numerous events led him to change his ways, and June Carter decided to marry him when he became sober in 1968. In the years that followed, he steadily reduced his drug use to the point where he was mostly sober by 1970.

In 1969, ABC gave Johnny Cash his own variety show. The Johnny Cash Show aired until 1971 and included a number of popular acts. By the mid-1970s, Cash’s popularity had waned, and he resumed drug use in 1977.

Although he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, he did not have any chart-topping singles throughout the next decade. He did, however, continue touring and releasing music.

By 1983, Cash had reached rock bottom in terms of heroin addiction once more. It all began when he was prescribed medications following a mid-section kick from an ostrich he kept on his farm.

He spent the following decade or so in and out of various recovery facilities, and he relapsed multiple times. He underwent double-bypass heart surgery in 1988 and refused to take any painkillers due to his drug problems.

By the 1990s, Johnny Cash had become, as he put it, “invisible” to major record labels, and he struggled to secure notable deals. The younger generations, on the other hand, were discovering Cash’s music, and various punk bands began covering it. During this time era, Cash also collaborated with the band U2.

Johnny Cash’s Death!

Johnny Cash died of complications from diabetes on September 12, 2003, less than four months after his wife.

The singer had been ailing for some time, having been diagnosed with Shy–Drager syndrome in 1997, according to Cash: The Autobiography.

Johnny had previously told fans he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease after falling from the stage during a show, although it turned out this was a misdiagnosis.
