Tyra Lynne Banks was born in Inglewood, California, on December 4, 1973. Her modelling career started when she was still in high school. She was turned down by four modelling agencies before landing a deal with L.A. Models.
She then signed with Elite Model Management in Paris when she was 16 years old, and relocated to Milan. Two years later, during the 1991 Paris Fashion Week, she made her runway debut. During her debut runway season, she booked a total of 25 shows.
