He later migrated with his mother and brother to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he played basketball for the Lawrence North High School team. Oden led his high school basketball team to three consecutive Indiana Class 4A titles and was named the 2005 and 2006 National Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Greg attended Ohio State University from 2006 to 2007 and made his college debut on December 2nd, 2006, after missing the first half of the season due to a wrist injury. He ended with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in the game. That year, Steve Kerr, a sports announcer, referred to Greg as a “once-in-a-decade player.”

Oden had an outstanding college career, winning Defensive Player of the Year and leading his team to the 2007 National Championship.

Greg was named to the Associated Press’s All-American team, the first freshman to do so since 1990. After one year of collegiate basketball, Oden declared his intention to pursue the 2007 NBA draught.

Greg spent the next two years training for a failed NBA comeback. On August 26, 2015, Oden agreed to a one-year, $1.2 million deal with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Jiangsu Dragons. Greg left the team midway through the season.
