Barty was born in Ipswich, Queensland, on April 24, 1996, to Josie and Robert Barty. Her father grew up in Bowen, a small town in rural North Queensland, where he became a Queensland and Australian golf representative and then worked for the Queensland State Library.

Her mother is the daughter of English immigrants, was a state representative for Queensland in golf when she was younger, and after retiring from golf, began working as a radiographer.

Barty is a descendant of the Indigenous Australian Ngaragu people, who live in southern New South Wales and northeastern Victoria, through her great-grandmother. She was born and raised in Springfield, a suburb of Ipswich, Queensland, where she attended Woodcrest State College.
