Paul Franklin Dano (June 19, 1984) is an actor from the United States. Before making his cinematic debut in The Newcomers, he began his career on Broadway (2000).
Dano is the son of Gladys (née Pipp), a homemaker, and Paul A. Dano, a financial adviser, was born in New York City, New York.
Sarah, his younger sister, is his only sibling. Dano was born and raised in New York City, where he attended the Browning School for the first few years of his life. Dano’s family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, while he was a child, before settling in Wilton, Connecticut.
Dano went on to Wilton High School, where he graduated in 2002 and went on to Eugene Lang College in New York City.
He was interested in community theatre, and his parents were pushed to move him to New York while he was performing in New Canaan.

He gained praise for his work as Dwayne Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance for his role in L.I.E. (2001). (2006).
He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his twin roles as Paul and Eli Sunday in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007).
Dano has also received praise for his parts in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners as John Tibeats and Alex Jones, respectively (2013).
His performance in Love & Mercy (2014) got him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of singer Brian Wilson. In The Batman, he also played Edward Nashton / The Riddler (2022).
Dano made his directorial debut with Wildlife (2018), a drama film based on Richard Ford’s novel. With his wife Zoe Kazan, he co-wrote the screenplay. He received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora in 2018.

Dano has been married to actress and screenwriter Zoe Kazan since 2007, and they have two children. They have a daughter, who was born in August of this year. They live in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill.
Dano is the principal guitarist and vocalist for the band Mook. After attending one of Dano’s shows in Brooklyn, filmmaker Bong Joon-ho says he wrote a part for him in 2017’s Okja.
Matt Reeves, who directed The Batman, also wrote the role of the Riddler with Dano in mind.
