James has amassed a number of large financial windfalls throughout the course of his career as a result of some astute business moves.

When Titanic ran over budget, James famously handed up his $8 million compensation, as we’ll see later in this piece. Instead, he opted for back-end points.

When the picture became the highest-grossing film of all time up to that moment, those points finally converted into a $650 million payoff for Cameron.

Without accounting for inflation, Cameron has made almost $7 billion in sales from overseas markets, DVDs, video games, television series, and merchandising.

With Titanic ($2.19 billion) and Avatar ($2.78 billion), he has the distinction of directing two of the highest-grossing films of all time.

He was also the first person to direct a film with a $100 million budget (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), a $200 million budget (Titanic), and a $500 million budget (Avatar), which was released in 2009.

Titanic paid Cameron the most money he’d ever received. He decided to give in his $8 million directing fees in exchange for backend earnings after the film ran drastically over budget.

This proved to be a prudent move, as he has amassed a fortune of over $650 million, making him one of the wealthiest directors of all time.

While pursuing a career in film, he will be able to write, produce, and direct some of the most important films ever thanks to Avatar.

Cameron made an estimated $260 million in 2010 alone because of the tremendous success of Avatar. To date, he has made more than $350 million from Avatar.

Please keep in mind that James Cameron has made at least $1 billion from Avatar and Titanic alone.

Cameron divides his time between his California house and his New Zealand home.

He allegedly paid $16 million for 2,500 acres of New Zealand farmland in 2012 and established a ranch there.

From 1989 to 2020, James’ principal LA residence was a villa in Serra Retreat, a gated neighbourhood in the hills above Malibu.

He built a 4.5-acre compound out of various structures (basically two enormous mansions) with a total of 16,000 square feet of living space and 11 bedrooms, as well as two pools, multiple spas, and other amenities.

In September 2020, James will put the mad compound up for sale for $25 million.  One of the two combined residences shown in the video above sold for $8.2 million in June 2021.

A former Cameron property in Malibu spans a little more than 700 acres. The land was acquired in successive transactions, beginning with a $5.4 million acquisition of 500 acres in 1999.

He listed the entire 700-acre property for $25 million in 2007. He was unable to find a buyer in the end. The area was purchased for $12 million in 2014 by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a government non-profit.

James formerly owned a 65-acre property near Santa Barbara, which he sold in 2005. He currently owns a 102-acre Santa Barbara property that he purchased in 1999.

James Cameron made $700 million by selling his Terminator rights for $1. However, it is still his greatest regret.
