Why did Chris Jericho punch Shawn Michaels’s wife?

Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho had one of the most memorable WWE feuds in recent memory back in 2008.

When they reunited five years later, the famous pair had already clashed and created magic on the biggest platform when they put on a classic at WrestleMania 19 in 2003, but they were on different levels and tiers.

It all began innocently enough, with Jericho serving as a special guest referee at Backlash for Michaels vs. Batista.

After that, Jericho got HBK on his RAW talkshow to discuss some things – still as a babyface – because he believed Michaels had feigned a knee injury to win his match with The Animal.

Michaels refuted Jericho’s charges and superkicked him. They attempted to converse on the Highlight Reel once more, but this time it ended with Jericho shoving Michaels through his Jeritron 5000 – essentially a large television – causing major damage to Michaels’ eye.

Michaels kept selling the injury all the way up until SummerSlam, and it was widely expected that he would declare his retirement. He even brought his wife to the announcement in order to make it feel more genuine.

Jericho would interrupt the match and demand that HBK acknowledge that he was the one who had retired Shawn Michaels. “I’d like you to do me a favour,” Michaels replied.

I want you to go home and sit your wife and kids down and tell them that their father will never, ever be Shawn Michaels.”

Jericho snapped at that point and drew Michaels back before throwing a blow. HBK, on the other hand, ducked, and Jericho instead punched his wife, Rebecca, in the face. And he hit for real this time.
