Early life
Jermell is one minute younger than his identical twin Jermall, making them identical twins. Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas, is where both of the brothers went to school. They first started boxing when they began accompanying their father, who was a former boxer, to the gym.
After two years on the amateur boxing scene, Jermell advanced to the elite level, winning a bronze medal at the 2005 Junior Olympics at the age of fifteen, and then a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
