History

Founded in New York City in 1892 by David T. Abercrombie, the original Abercrombie & Fitch was an outfitter for the aristocratic outdoorsman. In 1900, rich lawyer and real estate developer  Ezar Fitch, a longtime Abercrombie customer, purchased a sizable stake in the company.

In 1904, it was renamed “Abercrombie & Fitch Co.” and incorporated. From 1907 through 1928, Fitch was the sole owner of the company after purchasing Abercrombie’s portion. Shotguns, fishing rods, fishing boats, and tents were some of the company’s best-known products, as were the company’s tents.

When it was in its heyday, it furnished Roosevelt’s safari and Byrd’s Antarctica expeditions. The rifle used by Ernest Hemingway to commit suicide in 1961 was acquired from Abercrombie & Fitch as well. Consignment firearms were given to the corporation by Hemingway’s widow following his death.

Lower-priced competition and maintaining an image were the key challenges for the company in the 1970s. As a result of rising operational costs, they had to give up some of their most expensive objects, such as a $18,000 (equivalent to $125,000 in 2021) gold and onyx chess set. They were also obliged to reduce their stock of moderately priced goods due to cash flow issues.

After a long battle, The Limited, an Ohio-based clothing retailer, purchased Oshman’s in 1988. At one time, it was a subsidiary of Limited Brands and then a publicly traded corporation; but it has since grown to become one of the largest clothing companies in the US.

When it comes to its advertising and charitable activities, the company has maintained a high profile since 1997. It has also been involved in legal disputes over branding; clothing style; and employment practises. Teenagers turned to quick fashion chains like H&M and Forever 21 for their clothes during the Great Recession of the early twenty-first century.

When Mike Jeffries took over as CEO in the 1990s, he shifted the company’s focus to selling to teenagers. In 1998, Abercrombie & Fitch launched a children’s clothing line called Abercrombie Kids.

After the popularity of Abercrombie & Fitch, Abercrombie & Fitch launched Abercrombie Kids. The company’s popularity grew significantly in 1999. “A fresh idea based on the upbeat, easygoing California lifestyle” was launched by Hollister Co. in 2000.

Present

A high of $84.23 in October 2007 was followed by a low of $14.64 in November 2008 for the company’s shares.
