Development
In May of 2004, Jeffrey Katzenberg said that the Shrek tale had nearly from the start been planned for five films. Katzenberg stated, “Before the first one was completed, we discussed the entire story of Shrek, and each chapter answers questions about the first film and provides us understanding.”
“Shrek 3 and 4 will expose additional unresolved questions, and the last chapter will explain how Shrek ended up in the swamp when we first meet him in the first film,” Katzenberg announced in June 2007 that the fifth film will be released in 2013, but they are still working on it to this day.

Cancellation
DreamWorks Animation revealed in May 2009 that the fourth film will be titled Shrek Forever After, hinting that it would be the final installment in the Shrek franchise. Bill Damaschke, chief of creative production at DWA, confirmed this in November 2009, stating, “Everything that was liked about Shrek in the original film is included in the final picture.”
In May of 2010, Josh Klausner, one of the authors of Shrek Forever After, described the genesis of the script: “When I initially joined the project, it was not intended to be the final installment; there were originally five Shrek movies planned.
Then, approximately one year into production, Jeffrey Katzenberg concluded that the plot we’d created was the best way for Shrek’s adventure to conclude.”
Re-Development
In a February 2014 interview with Fox Business Network, Katzenberg hinted at the possibility of a fifth film, stating, “We enjoy giving a little bit of downtime. But I believe you can rest assured that there will be another installment in the Shrek series.
We have not completed our work, and more importantly, neither has he.” After NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion in June 2016, the company’s president and CEO, Steve Burke, stated plans to resurrect the franchise and other DreamWorks productions.
The Hollywood Reporter reported in July 2016 that a fifth film was scheduled for release in 2019.
Pre-production
Eddie Murphy said in September 2016 that the picture would be released in 2019 or 2020 and that the script was complete.
Mike Mitchell revealed in October 2016 that Austin Powers screenwriter Michael McCullers wrote a script based on his own original concept. When asked about the script in March 2017, McCullers stated that it represented “a very significant makeover” for the film series.

Why Has Shrek 5 Been Canceled?
The cancellation of Shrek 5 was due to its lack of profitability for the studio. The film reportedly required $250 million to make. The intended release date for the film was April 2019, but production was delayed to November 2018 due to a lack of revenue.
