St. Louis native Metro Boomin is an American record producer, record executive, composer, and DJ.
In the mid-2010s, he became well-known for his successful records with Atlanta hip hop and trap artists such as Future, 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, and Migos. He began his production career while still in high school.
Early Years
Metro Boomin, whose true name is Leland Tyler Wayne, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 16, 1993. There are four of his siblings. Wayne first became interested in music in middle school, when he played bass guitar in the school band; he began producing beats at the age of 13.
Wayne attended Parkway North High School as a teen. Despite his original desire to pursue a lyrical career, he ultimately chose to pursue hip-hop production instead.
Career Beginnings
While still in high school, Wayne began to network with famous hip-hop artists using social media. Frequently, his mother drove him from St. Louis to Atlanta so he could interact with online-correspondent artists.
Tay Don was one of the first musicians with whom he collaborated; this led to collaborations with Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, and Future. Wayne moved to Atlanta after graduating from high school to attend Morehouse College as a business management major.
However, after one semester, he decided to leave to pursue a career in music full-time. Under the alias Metro Boomin, he released his debut mixtape “19 & Boomin” in 2013.

Producing Innovations
In 2014, Metro’s career as a hip-hop producer took off. In the same year, he served as executive producer for Future’s mixtape “Monster” and produced “I Won,” the sixth single off Future’s studio album “Honest.”
In 2015, Metro served as executive producer for the joint mixtape “What a Time to Be Alive” by Future and Drake. After that, he continued to collaborate extensively with Future, executive producing his 2016 mixtape “Purple Reign” and producing the hit single “Jumpman.”
Also in 2016, Metro produced the chart-topping singles “Bad and Boujee” by Migos and “X” by 21 Savage, and he and 21 Savage released the EP “Savage Mode.”
The next year, Metro delivered more charting singles, including “Mask Off” by Future, “Tunnel Vision” by Kodak Black, and “Bounce Back” by Big Sean.

Three years later, in November, he released his debut studio album, “Not All Heroes Wear Capes.” It premiered at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured guest appearances by Gucci Mane, Young Thug, Gunna, Drake, 21 Savage, and Travis Scott, among others.

Metro focuses on trap music, a type of hip hop that originated in the southern United States in the early 2000s. His sound is comprised of powerful bass, gothic melodies, and synthetic percussion.
Other Activities
Metro intended to produce a collaborative album with Young Thug dubbed “Metro Thuggin'” To promote the project, a collaboration single titled “The Blanguage” was released. In the end, “Metro Thuggin'” was never released, although some leaked tunes appeared online in late 2015.
Metro started his own record label, Boominati Worldwide, in cooperation with Universal Music Group and Republic Records in June of 2017.
Early the following year, Metro and rapper SZA was featured in a Gap advertisement accompanying Metro’s self-produced remix of the Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now.”
