Lock and Key Season 3: When Will Season 3 of Locke & Key Be Released?
Locke & Key, the series based on the iconic comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, took some time to find a home, going from a film adaptation to being marketed as a series at Fox and Hulu before arriving on Netflix, where it has become a certified hit.
After their father is murdered in a mysterious manner, the Locke family relocates to their ancestral home, Keyhouse, where they discover a set of supernatural keys.
The series from showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill contains all the elements of binge-worthy coming-of-age paranormal dramas.
Season 2, which debuted on Netflix in the fall of 2021, concluded with an episode aptly titled “Cliffhanger” and left the Locke children with even more danger hanging in their creepy Massachusetts town of Matheson.
Season 3 of Locke & Key has been confirmed and was actually ordered before Season 2’s filming concluded in late 2020. Below, we attempt to use our mystery-solving and otherworldly Locke-family-like abilities to predict the forthcoming season.
When Will Season 3 of Locke & Key Be Released?
Given that the next season is supposedly already in post-production, it appears likely that the final season will be released this year. Actors filmed Season 3 in early 2021, immediately following Season 2 production, so there shouldn’t be too much left to do.
Given that first-look images of the new season are already accessible on Netflix, we speculate that it will air soon, possibly in the summer of 2022.
On the other hand, it is one of Netflix’s supernatural blockbusters, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it landed just in time for the Halloween season, which is when Season 2 debuted.

Is Season 3 the Series’ Final Season?
In April 2022, Deadline stated that Season 3 of Locke & Key will be its final installment. Despite the fact that this will be our last paranormal adventure with the Locke children, it’s important to note that the program was not necessarily canceled, so fans need not worry about their favorite stories being cut short.
Since Season 1 became a definite blockbuster, Netflix and showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill have reportedly had a three-season narrative in mind for the program.
The creators of the show said in a statement, “Once production on the series began, we determined that three seasons would be sufficient to bring the Locke family and Keyhouse adventures to a satisfactory finish.
As storytellers, we are grateful to have been able to tell Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s extraordinary story exactly as we desired. However, we are preserving the mystical keys for our own use.”
How Many Episodes Is Season 3 of Locke & Key?
Unlike the first two seasons, which each contained 10 episodes, Season 3 will consist of only eight episodes.
According to Deadline, the creative team always intended for the final season to consist of eight episodes, so they should be equally as full of surprises and scares as previous seasons.
Who Will Be Returning for Season 3 of Locke & Key?
It is confirmed that the entire core cast will return to Matheson to solve the mystery of Keyhouse Manor.
That means you can expect to see more of Tyler Locke (Connor Jessup),
- Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones),
- Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott),
- Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield),
- Duncan Locke (Aaron Ashmore),
- Scot Cavendish (Petricia Jones),
- Josh Bennett (Brendan Hines),
- and Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand),
who will likely be seen even more frequently now that he’s out (If you want to get all choked up about the series ending, a few cast members sent farewell messages on social media when production concluded.)
Ellie Whedon, portrayed by Sherri Saum, will also be appearing more frequently. Before Season 3 began filming in the fall of 2021, Deadline claimed that Saum had been promoted to series regular and that Ellie and her son Rufus (Coby Bird) would return to Matheson, but “haunted by her time spent behind the Black Door.”
Moreover, “a new and increasingly severe menace” is claimed to loom over the community. What will Locke & Key’s third season be about?
At this point, the show has veered significantly from its original material, so you won’t necessarily find answers about what will happen next there. It appears that the upcoming season will be the most intense yet.
Meredith Averill, as stated by Collider, “The third season focuses significantly more on the family. They will face the worst threat they have ever encountered. This unites them in a way we have never seen before.”
It is difficult to determine exactly what she means, but it seems likely that she is referring to Captain Frederick Gideon. Eden used the Echo Key to resurrect Gideon as an echo at the end of Season 2, and he now intends to exact revenge on our favorite demon-fighting family.
On an individual level, we should see the consequences of the decisions made by some individuals towards the end of Season 2.
Nina, for instance, elected to utilize the Memory Key to help her remember everything, which will significantly alter the Locke family dynamic. The showrunners told Collider that Tyler’s refusal has “consequences and will alter his connection with his family.”
It is especially crucial to remember that he is nearing his 18th birthday and will soon be able to continue utilizing magic; with a larger threat on the horizon, this might be a factor.
