Lightyear Release Date: Cast | Plot | Is It Going to Be a Movie?
Lightyear Release Date: With the help of his robot friend, Buzz Lightyear sets out on an interplanetary journey.
Buzz Lightyear has been a major player in Pixar’s ever-lasting longevity since the company’s start.
Pixar has been adamant about making additional Toy Story stories or Toy Stories with the space ranger in the foreground, and he is arguably the studio’s most recognizable character.
But now the cadet must travel to infinity and, of course, beyond.
Indeed, with Lightyear, the multi-award-winning animation studio’s 26th feature film, the iconic spaceman will finally get his film.
With Chris Evans lending his voice to the galaxy-hopping adventurer; this Buzz Lightyear will not be the same Buzz that audiences have grown up with; especially since this version of the character will follow the origins of the astronaut character who inspired the toy; rather than Andy’s plastic friend.
Here are some important data regarding Lightyear, which will be released in theatres in 2022.
Chris Evans Will Voice Buzz Lightyear
It’s difficult to picture Buzz Lightyear’s voice being anything other than Tim Allen’s.
While various voice actors have played the space cadet in the past; such as Patrick Warburton; Pat Fraley, and Corey Burton; the movies have always used the Home Improvement star (except Toy Story 3’s Spanish Mode Buzz; who is portrayed by Javier Fernandez-Pea). However, this is about to change.
When the movie Lightyear was announced, it was revealed that Chris Evans, not Tim Allen, would play the ever-enduring planet-bouncing, super suit-wearing space ranger.
While Toy Story fans were immediately alarmed, fearing that Allen’s time with the character was coming to an end, Disney/Pixar swiftly stressed that this version of Buzz is not the one we’ve known for decades.
After this standalone film, it’s unknown how long Evans will continue to voice this version of Buzz.
Lightyear Movie Plot
Buzz Lightyear, accompanied by a squad of eager recruits and his robot friend, sets out on an interplanetary adventure.
Who Is in the Lightyear Cast?
The titular Space Ranger will be voiced by Captain America himself, Chris Evans.
Even though Tim Allen voiced Buzz Lightyear in the first four Toy Story films and has continued to do so in much of the franchise’s related media, MacLane, who directed Allen in the 2011 Toy Story short film Small Fry and the 2013 television special Toy Story of Terror!, had this to say about the new casting:
“I wanted the picture to have gravitas and seriousness to it, but yet have an actor who could add humor to that seriousness,” says the director.
He was, without a doubt, the best and only option. I didn’t have a second number.
It was obvious from the start. ‘Who would you get if you were going to make a serious sci-fi picture on Buzz Lightyear?’ Chris Evans, to be precise.’ You’ll need someone with star power.
Who would do it if it had to be live-action? He is capable of doing both. Although that chin would be so strange in real life.
You’d never be able to get around it. He was, however, the first pick, and he’s been an incredible companion.
He immediately grasped the material and felt a sense of obligation to figure out the character’s translation, as well as the greater context of this sci-fi film, and to deliver on it.
He’s just been a fantastic creative partner throughout the entire process.”
Angus MacLane may not be as well-known as Brad Bird or Andrew Stanton, but he’s worked with the pioneering animation studio for more than two decades.
MacLane began his career as an animator on A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2 and has since progressed through the ranks to become a director, most notably with his work on Toy Story Toons: Small Fry and Toy Story of Terror.
In 2016, the seasoned employee co-directed Finding Dory with Stanton, and now, with Lightyear, MacLane will direct his first Pixar film.

Lightyear’s Release Date Is Set
Infinity isn’t as far away as you would think. Indeed, on June 17th, 2022, Lightyear, the new animated origin narrative for the galaxy-searching space ranger, will be launched.
While Disney has a horrible tendency of releasing original Pixar films on Disney+ instead of in theatres, this solo re-imagining will be released in theatres.
