Daughter of Elon Musk Disowns Him and Files to Drop His Name
One of Elon Musk’s children has submitted a petition for a name change, stating, “I no longer live with or wish to be related in any way to my biological father.”
The 18-year-old wishes to adopt the maiden name of her mother, Elon’s first wife, Justine Musk, whose complete new name is withheld for privacy reasons.
The petition to have her gender officially recognized as female and her name formally changed on a new birth certificate were filed in April in California Superior Court, and a hearing will be held later this month.
The filing was first reported by TMZ and began circulating on Reddit and Twitter over the weekend.
Prior to the TMZ article, The Daily Beast emailed Elon Musk about his daughter’s petition, and he stated, “She does not want to be a public person. I believe it is essential to protect her right to privacy. It is not proper to out someone against their will.”
The news was subsequently publicized by various additional media publications, including The Los Angeles Times.
The Daily Beast was unable to speak with Justine Musk or her daughter. However, the mother tweeted as the tale began to spread.
Cathy Renna, director of communications for the National LGBTQ Task Force, stated to The Daily Beast that the organization “would never accept or condone the outing of a young person because their parents are famous.”
“One would hope that this would serve as a wake-up call for Elon Musk, who has a history of making anti-trans and rude remarks, especially about pronoun usage. Renna added, “We hope she finds support from other family members and understands she has a vast community behind her no matter what.”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” was criticized in 2020 for tweeting that “pronouns stink”; his then-partner, Grimes, even asked him to turn off his phone because she “cannot support hate.”
Musk stated in a subsequent tweet that he “totally supports trans, but all these pronouns are an aesthetic nightmare.”
Musk has ridiculed the concept of gender differences in recent tweets, stating on June 11 that “we are simultaneously taught that gender differences do not exist and that genders are so fundamentally different that irreversible surgery is the only option.”
“Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can explain this contradiction,” he continued. Simultaneously, he and the gender-neutral musician Grimes have apparently developed a gender-neutral parenting style for their two children.
Grimes previously stated during a YouTube Livestream, “I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in life.” Musk has five children with Justine, including twins and triplets. In 2010, Justine penned a scathing article for Marie Claire about their marriage.
“He had grown up in a male-dominated culture in South Africa, and the desire to compete and control that had made him so successful in business did not vanish when he returned home.
This, along with the great economic disparity between us, caused a specific dynamic to emerge in the months following our wedding,” she wrote.
“Elon’s judgment trumped mine, and he was always pointing out the ways in which he found me wanting. I told him again, “I am your wife, not your employee.” As frequently, he stated, “If you were my employee, I would terminate you.”
After their divorce, Justine, a famous novelist, raised their children out of the public eye. However, she recently attracted attention for tweeting about the Amber Heard-Johnny Depp defamation lawsuit, in which Elon Musk played a supporting role.
