Early Years and Secondary School
Brittney Griner was born in Houston, Texas on October 18, 1990, as the youngest of four siblings. She attended Nimitz High School as an adolescent, where she earned a basketball letter and played varsity volleyball as a freshman.
Griner helped lead the Nimitz Cougars to the Texas 5A state final, but they ultimately fell to Mansfield Summit High School during her senior season.
Griner completed her senior season with 52 dunks, including a single-game record of seven versus Aldine High School. Moreover, she set a record with 318 blocks in a single season. Griner was designated as a WBCA All-American in recognition of her efforts.

Academic Career
Griner played basketball for the Baylor Lady Bears at Baylor University throughout her college years. As a rookie, she instantly asserted her supremacy by setting a new single-season record of 223 blocked shots.
In late 2009, she recorded Baylor’s first-ever triple-double, and in early 2010, she became only the seventh female collegiate basketball player to dunk. Baylor entered the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 by defeating Tennessee.
In the ensuing victory over Georgetown, Griner established a new NCAA Tournament record with 14 blocks. Baylor defeated Duke to advance to the Elite Eight, while Griner established a new tournament record with 35 blocks. Baylor defeated eventual champion Connecticut in the Final Four.
Griner was voted First-Team All-American as a sophomore; as a junior, she was named AP Player of the Year and helped Baylor defeat Notre Dame to win the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.
Baylor finished the season unbeaten with 40 victories, the most in NCAA history. Griner played her final collegiate game in 2013 when Baylor fell to the University of Louisville in the Sweet 16 round.
