High School Career
Villanueva went to Newtown High School in Queens, New York, for the first year of his high school career. There, he was a teammate of Smush Parker, who would go on to play in the NBA.
He then went on to complete his final three years of high school at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, where he was teammates with Luol Deng, who would go on to play in the NBA.
As a senior, Villanueva was recognized as an All-American and was also given the title of Co-Player of the Year in New Jersey. However, in order to participate in collegiate basketball for the University of Connecticut, he decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the 2003 NBA draft.

Villanueva initially made a verbal commitment to play college basketball for the University of Illinois; however, he later retracted his word after Bill Self departed the Illini to coach for the University of Kansas.
