Grantchester is a British ITV detective drama set in the 1950s village of the same name in Cambridgeshire. Both James Norton’s Sidney Chambers and Tom Brittney’s William Davenport have a sideline in sleuthing with the assistance of Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green).

A second season aired between March and April 2016 and a third season premiered on April 23, 2017. On 12 April 2018, it was announced that the fourth season would be the final to feature James Norton in the starring role.

In the fourth season, Tom Brittney as Reverend Will Davenport took up the lead role from Norton. The fifth season began in January of 2020. A sixth season was ordered on July 17, 2020, and transmission began on September 3, 2021.

A seventh season was ordered on July 28, 2021, and filming began in the summer of 2021, with Brittney directing for the first time. It premiered on March 11, 2022, and ended on April 15, 2022.

The series is based on James Runcie’s short story collection The Grantchester Mysteries. The first series, which aired in 2014, was based on the six stories from the first book, Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death.

Chambers’ more intuitive ways of eliciting information from witnesses and suspects are complemented by Keating’s rough, analytical approach to policing.

Several subplots concern Leonard Finch’s homosexuality prior to the decriminalization of male homosexuality in England and Wales (1967).
