“Succession,” which airs on HBO, received a total of 25 Emmy nominations on Tuesday morning, making it the show with the most nominations overall and breaking the record for the most acting nods in a single year.

The critically acclaimed show about the inner workings of a super-wealthy family received a record-breaking 14 nominations in the acting categories, which was enough to surpass the previous record holders “Roots” and “Rich Man, Poor Man,” both of which had 13 nominations.

In the category of lead actor for a drama, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong were recognized; in the category of supporting actress, J. Smith-Cameron and Sarah Snook were honored; and in the category of supporting actor, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen were honored.

Hope Davis, Sanaa Lathan, and Harriet Walter have been honored for their roles as guest actresses in a drama, and Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, and Alexander Skarsgard have been recognized for their roles as guest actors in a drama.

Given how much love “Succession” has had from the Academy in the past, the Academy’s decision to make history shouldn’t come as a major surprise. The previous year, during the second season, it was honored with 18 nominations.

At the beginning of this year, the third season won several awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for ensemble cast, the Producers Guild Award for drama series, two Writers Guild Awards, and the Directors Guild Award for drama directing.

Brian Cox told us that this particular recognition meant the most to him out of all the others. Mark Mylod directed the pilot episode of Season 4, which was shot back in June when production on the new season got underway.
