What’s the Story Behind Bullet Train?
Bullet Train is based on Ktar Isaka’s Japanese novel and takes place on a Japanese Bullet Train traveling from Tokyo to Morioka with very few stops.
Five assassins are aboard the vehicle, each with their mission. They are all interconnected, unbeknownst to them.
When the assassins realize what is truly going on, they must fight for their survival against one another on their way to discovering the secrets that await them at their destination.
The premise promises brutal and relentless action and has a John Wick vibe. It will be interesting to see how the movie is rated.
While an R-rating appears to be a foregone conclusion because, except for Hobbs & Shaw, all of Leitch’s films have received that rating, Sony may opt for a PG-13 rating to attract younger audiences.

Bullet Train Release Date Controversy
As their characters in Ktar Isaka’s novel were Japanese, the hiring of numerous non-Asian actors, notably Brad Pitt and Joey King, sparked charges of whitewashing.
Even though the American version would have made sense if the story took place in the U.S., David Inoue, Executive Director of the Japanese American Citizens League, criticized the castings.
He said that the fact that the movie kept the novel’s Japanese setting and kept Japanese characters in the background made it look like whitewashing.
Inoue further criticized the film for promoting the “belief that Asian actors in the leading roles cannot carry a blockbuster” despite the recent box office successes of Asian-led films like Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Inoue also questioned the actors’ allyship to the Asian community for knowingly accepting whitewashed roles.
