Bullet Train Release Date Controversy

As their characters in Ktar Isaka’s novel were Japanese, the hiring of numerous non-Asian actors, notably Brad Pitt and Joey King, sparked charges of whitewashing.

Even though the American version would have made sense if the story took place in the U.S., David Inoue, Executive Director of the Japanese American Citizens League, criticized the castings.

He said that the fact that the movie kept the novel’s Japanese setting and kept Japanese characters in the background made it look like whitewashing.

Inoue further criticized the film for promoting the “belief that Asian actors in the leading roles cannot carry a blockbuster” despite the recent box office successes of Asian-led films like Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Inoue also questioned the actors’ allyship to the Asian community for knowingly accepting whitewashed roles.
