On his 12th birthday, his mother gifted him with his first guitar. As a teenager, Vedder sought solace in surfing and music.

Eddie was in his late teens when his mother and stepfather divorced, and he chose to remain in San Diego with his father while his mother and siblings returned to Chicago.

During his senior year at San Dieguito High School, Vedder moved into an apartment on his own and began working nights at a pharmacy in Encinitas, California. Vedder discovered after the divorce that Mueller was not his biological father.

By then, his biological father, Louis Severson Jr., had passed away. Vedder dropped out of high school, returned back to Chicago, and adopted his mother’s maiden name, Vedder. Eddie obtained his GED during the early 1980s.

In 1984, he moved back to San Diego with his girlfriend Beth Liebling and his friend Frank.

Ament, Gossard, Chris Cornell, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron launched the Temple of the Dog project as a tribute to Wood.  Ament and Gossard got Vedder’s demo tape and invited him to Seattle for an audition with Temple of the Dog.

He and the other members of Pearl Jam played a rendition of “Gigaton’s” debut song, “Dance of the Clairvoyants,” that was socially distant. Each member of Pearl Jam played his part independently.

Vedder circled a room filled with trippy lighting, bizarre props, and his wife and girls. Ament performed his portions from his home studio in Montana, while McCready painted himself with glow-in-the-dark paint before going live.
