Early Years
Eddie Vedder was born on December 23, 1964, in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, to Edward Louis Severson III. In 1965, his mother Karen Vedder, and father Louis Severson Jr. separated.
His mother quickly remarried a man named Peter Mueller. Vedder was taught to believe that Mueller was his father. Vedder relocated to San Diego with his parents and brothers in the mid-1970s.
On his 12th birthday, his mother gifted him with his first guitar. As a teenager, Vedder sought solace in surfing and music.
Eddie was in his late teens when his mother and stepfather divorced, and he chose to remain in San Diego with his father while his mother and siblings returned to Chicago.

Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Andrew Wood, among others, comprised Mother Love Bone, a Seattle-area band. Wood died at age 24 of a heroin overdose.
Ament, Gossard, Chris Cornell, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron launched the Temple of the Dog project as a tribute to Wood. Ament and Gossard got Vedder’s demo tape and invited him to Seattle for an audition with Temple of the Dog.
The sole album of Temple of the Dog was released in April 1991. Vedder and Cornell’s duet “Hunger Strike” became the band’s breakthrough single.
