From Japanese origins, Kingdom Hearts is one of the greatest games ever created. Kingdom Hearts was created by Square Enix which has made other famous games such as Final Fantasy and the Tomb Raider series. Kingdom Hearts was created back in 2002 for the PlayStation 2.

It has one of the most diverse and captivating stories ever. If you are interested in playing story-driven games then this is the game for you. Before purchasing any titles, read on to find out which ones are the best Kingdom Hearts titles.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is the game with the saddest undertone. While all the other Kingdom Hearts games have a very happy vibe, Birth by Sleep turned the vibe to the exact opposite. The game features three new characters in the story arc, Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, and how they set the events for all the other Kingdom Hearts games which have Sora as the protagonist.

Birth by Sleep is set 10 years before the events of Kingdom Hearts before Sora wields the keyblade. We also see the origins of Xehanort in this game, who is the main antagonist in the entire series. We get to experience the ordeal that Terra, Ventus, and Aqua go through and how they are split from each other despite being best friends for life.

Kingdom Hearts 2

Kingdom Hearts 2 was amazing in every possible way. From storyline to gameplay, everything about this game makes it stand out from the rest. The game starts as we are introduced to a new character named Roxas, who is connected to Sora in a lot of ways. Dora, however, is still in search of his friends who disappeared in the events of the first part of Kingdom Hearts when all three friends got separated on their island.

Kingdom Hearts 2 also introduced the “Drive Forms” which was something new to the series. We were also introduced to Organization XIII which serves as the antagonist party for the game. The game is the most captivating out of all the Kingdom Hearts games as we see quite a transition from Kingdom Hearts 1 Sora to Kingdom Hearts 2 Sora.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance was a bit different from all the other Kingdom Hearts titles in terms of story and gameplay. The game was initially released on the Nintendo 3DS but was later available in an HD remaster on the PlayStation 4.

Just like Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Dream Drop Distance features both Sora and Riku as playable characters and you get to play both of their storylines. In this game, Xehanort begins making his return and it initiates the story of Kingdom Hearts 3. Dream Drop Distance introduced the flowmotion feature in which Sora and Riku could jump off walls and attack enemies.

In this game, Sora and Riku are tasked to traverse all the worlds they visited before but this time the worlds are in slumber and Sora and Riku have to restore these worlds. This is Sora and Riku’s Mark of Mastery Exam which helps determine which one of the two is going to be a Keyblade Master. The game is quite essential in terms of the Kingdom Hearts storyline as it brings to more clarity who the actual antagonist in the game is.

Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts 3 was the last major installment in the series and it marked the end of the Dark Seeker Saga. In this game, Sora finally manages to defeat Master Xehanort, who had been the bane of Sora’s existence ever since the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep when Sora was just a child.

In this part, all the main characters from all Kingdom Hearts titles come together to fight Master Xehanort and finally put a stop to everyone’s misery. The game had amazing graphics but the character movement was a bit floaty as compared to the previous Kingdom Hearts titles. Kingdom Hearts 3 had a very interesting end to the saga and it was quite satisfying to see such a positive end.

In Conclusion

Kingdom Hearts is one of the best games created by Square Enix. Tetsuya Nomura has put a lot of thought into the game and the story is so well crafted that it keeps the player hooked throughout all the installments in the series. You can play all the games on the PS4 and PS5 if you purchase the Kingdom Hearts All-in-One bundle.
