World War Z was released seven years ago, and it’s been nearly as long since Paramount has been rumored to be working on a sequel.
The zombie film, based on Max Brooks’ novel of the same name, was a surprise box office success, grossing more than $500 million worldwide. The desire for a sequel was there, so why hasn’t it happened yet?
Perhaps, like the first film, a difficult development period will eventually lead to an actual sequel. However, as much as we hate to say it, it appears to be a distant possibility right now.
But hold onto a little bit of hope! In January 2020, co-producer Jeremy Kleiner suggested that “someday” a sequel might materialize.

World War Z 2 Release Date
The original photo was released decades ago, and fans have yet to see the sequel. They are hoping for a follow-up update to World War Z 2 soon. The statue has always been haunted by misfortune. Due to other commitments, several cast members initially withdrew from the sequel.

China, the world’s largest market for Hollywood films, could hurt the sequel’s box office revenue. Because of China’s 2019 zombie and ghost film ban, Paramount is hesitant to invest in the prequel, which is expected to cost between $190 million and $269 million. If Paramount allows it, the sequel could be released as early as 2023 or 2024.
After Brad Pitt Pursued Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, shooting began in the fall of 2018. The production of World War Z 2 was expected to start in June 2019, but that date was eventually pushed back to March due to director David Fincher’s work on Mindhunter Season 2.
World War Z 2 Release Date: Who’s Going to Be in Season 2?
Brad Pitt is on board to reprise his leading role as intrepid zombie fighter and former UN investigator Gerry Lane if the sequel materialises, but that may alter depending on when or if a filming date is set.
Mireille Enos announced in May 2016 that she would reprise her role as Karin Lane, his wife. Nearly four years later, it’s unclear where things stand, and, unexpectedly, no other casting has been announced.

Predicting the plot of the sequel is difficult because the original film was only loosely based on the best-selling book of the same name by author Max Brooks (who, FYI, is the son of Anne Bancroft and Mel Brooks).
The world-traveling original film offered a glimpse of hope for humanity’s survival against the hordes of the undead, but as Gerry Lane notes in the closing credits, much work remains.
The novel provides plenty of inspiration for the filmmakers to work with because its plot covers the globe and extends into a political future that has been significantly altered by the zombie plague.
