By 8 and 12, Trejo used marijuana, heroin, and cocaine. Uncle Gilbert exposed Trejo to all three and overdosed him on heroin. He relocated to Los Angeles’ Pacoima neighborhood at age 13 and never experienced bigotry. He later bought and lived in his childhood house.

Still, he spent time in juvenile offenders’ camps, including three years at Camp Glenn Rockey, San Dimas, for maiming a sailor (stabbing him in the face with broken glass), and numerous California prisons between 1959 and 1969; “I was in San Quentin, Folsom, Soledad, Vacaville, Susanville.”
