According to the White House, Biden, who has already begun taking Paxlovid and received two boosts, is only showing minor symptoms.
President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday. Still, his potentially serious infection does not put him in the same category as former President Donald Trump, who contracted the virus right before the 2020 election.
According to the White House, Biden, who has been boosted twice and has already begun Paxlovid, is experiencing subtle symptoms. Here are four reasons why Biden’s case differs from Trump’s.
When former President Donald Trump was diagnosed with Covid-19 in October 2020, the world was very different from now, when President Joe Biden was diagnosed with the illness.
In the Trump era, severe sickness and death rates were far higher, and scientists were still investigating the best approaches to manage the condition. These were the earliest resources available, but the then-president received the best treatment any American could wish for.
They comprised a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc., which was at the time experimental. He also received the steroid dexamethasone, and the injected antiviral redeliver from Gilead Sciences Inc. at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he spent three nights in the hospital.
So far, however, Biden’s method has been far more straightforward. He’s isolating himself while continuing to work from the White House and taking Paxlovid, an antiviral tablet made by Pfizer Inc. that’s a conventional treatment for high-risk patients. His wife stated that he was doing well.
The various medicines reflect the virus’s dynamic course and medical countermeasures against it. When Trump became ill, there were no coronavirus vaccinations or FDA-approved medications. Earlier versions widely distributed at the time were connected with a higher likelihood of severe problems.

According to infectious disease expert Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, “Trump was unvaccinated, and that was in the pre-vaccine era.”
The omicron subvariants that are currently increasing, such as BA.5, are highly infectious but tend to cause milder infections with considerably lower mortality rates. Furthermore, Biden has got four vaccine shots and is in excellent health for his age of 79.
Despite reports that some patients occasionally have a short resurgence in symptoms or positive test results, the five-day course of Paxlovid has been the go-to treatment for keeping high-risk patients out of the hospital.
After getting Paxlovid, Biden’s 81-year-old chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, experienced a return of Covid symptoms and eventually recovered.
Dexamethasone is mainly utilized in individuals who are hospitalized and have severe illnesses. Remdesivir has been approved for outpatient usage and is still often used in hospitals.
Theoretically, Biden might also obtain bebtelovimab from Eli Lilly & Co., a monoclonal antibody that retains efficacy against subvariants like BA.
However, the evidence supporting it in combination with Paxlovid is sparse. Adalja asserts that the combination may only be “of minor effect” in someone like Biden, who has received numerous vaccinations.

People like Biden “have a greater chance at avoiding hospitalizations and other severe problems” if they receive the proper vaccinations, swiftly diagnose, and receive treatment.
