Early Years
William Henry Gates III was born in Seattle, Washington on October 28, 1955. As a child, Gates was victimized by bullies.
He liked to remain in his room, where he would respond to his mother’s inquiries with “I’m thinking” At age 13, he enrolled in the prestigious Lakeside preparatory school and wrote his first computer program.
In his first year at Lakeside, he was in eighth grade, and the school’s Mother’s Club purchased a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and time on a GE computer using money from a fundraiser.
Gates developed an interest in BASIC programming for the GE computer. On this computer, he built his first program, a tic-tac-toe game. The players competed against the computer.
Gates and his buddies Paul Allen, Ric Weiland, and Kent Evans were eventually forbidden from using the school’s computer after they were detected exploiting operating system flaws to gain access to the machine for free. To earn money, the four students founded the Lakeside Programmers Club.
When their prohibition was lifted, the boys offered to find software bugs in exchange for more computer use. Gates began learning computer programming languages, such as Fortran, Lisp, and machine language.
A teacher at Lakeside requested that Gates and Evans automate the school’s class scheduling system in 1971. The buddies created a software with a twist: Gates altered the code to place him in classes with a greater proportion of attractive women.
Gates and Evans desired to get the new system operational by the end of their senior year. Then, at the end of their junior year, Evans died in an accident while mountain climbing. Gates went to Allen for assistance in completing the Lakeside project.
During their senior year, Gates and Allen founded the company Traf-O-Data and used the Intel 8008 processor to manufacture traffic counters. In the fall of 1973, he graduated from Lakeside School and enrolled at Harvard.
At Harvard, Gates attended math and computer science courses for graduate students. He met Steve Ballmer at Harvard. Gates left college at the conclusion of his sophomore year.
