Arrest and Escape
Carlos Ghosn was detained in Tokyo on November 19, 2018, on charges including fraudulent accounting, tax evasion, and diverting company funds for personal use.

A few months later, Ghosn reached a settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission over allegations that he failed to disclose Nissan’s payment of over $140 million.
As a result, he was fined $1 million and barred from acting as a director or officer of a public business for the following decade.

Fugitive
Late in 2019, it was reported that Ghosn had escaped Japan and taken sanctuary in Beirut, Lebanon via a sophisticated escape plan conducted by Michael Taylor, a former US Army Special Forces soldier and private security contractor.
Carlos apparently concealed in a box of audio equipment delivered by a sham band comprised of former military personnel. The audio case containing Carlos was loaded onto a private jet and traveled to Turkey.
He reportedly hid in the box until the plane entered Russian territory, at which point he quietly exited and sat in the rear of the aircraft. Once he arrived in Turkey, he boarded a new jet bound for Lebanon.
Ghosn ultimately confirmed his escape and stated that he refused to be “kept captive by a rigged Japanese court system.”
