Joseph Manchin III (born August 24, 1947) is an American politician and businessman who has served as West Virginia’s senior United States senator since 2010.
As a member of the Democratic Party, he served as West Virginia’s 34th governor from 2005 to 2010 and 27th secretary of state from 2001 to 2005.

Career
Manchin was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982 and to the West Virginia Senate in 1986, where he served from 1986 to 1996. He served as West Virginia’s secretary of state from 2001 to 2005, and then as its governor from 2005 to 2010.
On August 28, he defeated former Democratic Congressman Ken Hechler in the Democratic primary. In the general election, he defeated John Raese, a Republican businessman.
Since 2010, he has served as the senior United States senator from West Virginia. As a member of Congress, he is noted for his bipartisanship on issues such as abortion and gun ownership with his Republican colleagues.
He is also a major opponent of policy initiatives such as Medicare For All, the abolition of the filibuster, the packing of the Supreme Court, and a $15 per hour increase in the federal minimum wage. After the year 2020, he became a pivotal vote in the 50-50 Democratic-controlled Senate.
