Although there is no sign of Sherlock Holmes 3 filming, let alone a cinema release, there has been an exciting development for the franchise.
HBO Max and Warner Bros. announced in April 2022 that they were looking to expand the universe with two potential spin-off TV shows. Each series would focus on a new character rather than existing ones, though they could be introduced in the third film.
However, whether or not we see either series depends on the success of Sherlock Holmes 3. The threequel was supposed to be released in December 2021, but it has yet to be rescheduled.
“We started going, and then Covid hit, and they said, ‘Look, we’re going to stand it down, and Robert has something else he wants to do,'” Dexter Fletcher explained in June 2021.
“These things are so massive that you don’t want to chisel them into anything… I know Robert will not let that fish go free.”
Fletcher stated a year later, in June 2022: “I believe it will be made. I believe it must be made. Unfortunately, I don’t know the timeline for that, but I believe it should be.”
Fletcher took over as director of Sherlock Holmes 3 from Guy Ritchie in July 2019. The latest update sounds promising that we will eventually see the return of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Who Will Appear in Sherlock Holmes 3?
Naturally, since it wouldn’t be the same without their friendship, Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. announced that they would reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in the third film.
There is currently no information available regarding the potential reappearance of Kelly Reilly (Watson’s wife Mary), Stephen Fry (Sherlock’s brother Mycroft), or Eddie Marsan (Inspector Lestrade). Still, we wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t at least make a cameo.
After A Game of Shadows, Jared Harris’ outstanding performance as Professor James Moriarty appeared to be over, but we wouldn’t consider a comeback.
When Will Sherlock Holmes 3 Be Released in Theatres?
The third movie was initially scheduled for release on December 25, 2020. However, Warner Bros. later pushed that date back to December 22, 2021.

Since that deadline was missed, Sherlock Holmes 3 is still waiting for a specific release date.
Fletcher described it as “one of those awful twists of fate” when the pandemic struck and threw people into the air all over the planet. However, I am well aware of its enormous appetite, and I’m sure others are.
“However, I think it should be made because it’s fantastic. As previously stated, TV show spin-offs are possible, but it appears that they will occur after the third film is released. I sincerely hope so.
And with so little known about the third film, speculating on a release date is difficult. It appears they were always aiming for a December release, and we doubt it will be December 2022, so maybe December 2023 if work begins this year.
What Will the Plot of Sherlock Holmes 3 Be?
“We want it to be the best of the series,” Downey has said of the third film. So, which of Sherlock’s previous villains will the master detective face this time?
The first film featured Holmes and Watson battling the mystical would-be world ruler Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong). In contrast, the second featured Sherlock’s arch-enemy, Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris).
As previously stated, Harris appears to be a longshot to return. However, Holmes was supposed to have died in the same incident, only for the detective to stage his death and secretly appear in Watson’s office.

Our money is on Moriarty returning, with Harris possibly reprising the role. Holmes would be nothing without Moriarty, just as Batman would be nothing without the Joker.
On the other hand, Harris is skeptical of a return, telling Digital Spy in March 2018 that the last script he saw didn’t include Moriarty. It remains to be seen whether this will have changed by the time we begin filming.
