It was in 2015 when actress and producer Maria Bello was honoring Viola Davis with a Women Making History Award that the process of developing The Woman King into a film got its start.
According to Vanity Fair, Maria made the most of the chance to propose to Viola the concept of producing a historical drama, which resulted in an ecstatic reception from the crowd.
Cathy Schulman, the show’s producer, and she had already begun collaborating on an idea.
The film that is now known as The Woman King was created by Maria, Cathy, and writer Dana Stevens in collaboration with director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Old Guard). Gina Prince-Bythewood directed both of those films.
The film chronicles the narrative of the Agojie, who supposedly served as the inspiration for Black Panther’s Dora Milaje.
In history, the Agojie was a female-only military regiment that served in Dahomey (now Benin), which is located in West Africa. They were also known as the Dahomey Amazons. It is believed that King Houegbadja, the third king of Dahomey, was the one who established the organization.
The Agojie were known as elephant hunters when they were first established, but in 1727, its captain successfully deployed them in the battle against a kingdom in the nearby region.
The new monarch, Ghezo, began the process of constructing a more organized structure for his military in the 1800s. This system included the Agojie.
According to an academic study authored by Robin Law, people who spoke English referred to the ladies as “Amazons,” but the Agojie referred to themselves as “ahosi (king’s wives) or Mino (our mothers).”

Who is Viola Davis?
